Gangtok, 10th July: A high-level review meeting to assess the progress and discuss the issues and challenges in the implementation of various central schemes under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in North Eastern (NE) States was chaired by the Hon'ble Union Minister, MoHUA, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar on 9th July 2024 in Guwahati. The meeting was attended by State Ministers, senior officers from GoI and Secretaries from NE States.
All N E States gave a presentation during the meeting on the implementation of schemes. Sikkim was represented by Shri M.T. Sherpa, Secretary, UDD accompanied by Shri Niranjan Kapil, UPE, GSCDL. Shri Sherpa while giving the presentation highlighted the status of progress as well as issues and challenges faced by the state while implementing schemes namely; Smart Cities Mission- Gangtok & Namchi, AMRUT, PMAY, SBM (U), and DAY- NULM. He also drew the attention of the house on issues relating to damages caused to the urban amenities and services by the flashfloods in towns along Teesta basins and requested the Hon’ble Minister’s intervention in addressing the issue. He further submitted that despite difficult topography and connectivity issues with harsh monsoons, the State of Sikkim remains fully committed to completing the MoHUA schemes as per guidelines within the given timeline.
During the meeting, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, Hon’ble Minister emphasized on the importance of timely completion of projects and the need for Centre-State cooperation to overcome regional challenges. He assured the states of the Ministry's full support and urged them to utilize central funds effectively. The participating states from the N E provided valuable feedback and highlighted common region-specific issues, including geographic and socio-economic challenges.
